Nanoscience Laboratory in University of Science and Technology of China has been founded sin-ce 1998, which is combined by the CAS Key Laboratory of Structure Research and CAS Key Laboratory of Bond Selective Chemistry. It is also one of the Research Groups of Hefei National Laboratory for Phy-sical Science at the Microscale. The group leader, professor Jian-guo Hou is the academician of China Acade-my of Sciences, the academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, the administrative vice princ-ipal of the University of Science and Technology of China and the administrative vice director of He-fei National Laboratory for Physical Science at the Microscale. At pres-ent, the Laboratory was supported by the state's Natural Science Foundation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Fund, the Ministry of Scie-nce and Technology major research projects ( "molecular-scale quantum behavior and manipulation"), 973 Program and other research tasks.
The laboratory has advanced research equipments: Germany Omicron's Ultra-High Vacuum Scann-ing Tunneling Microscope, and Ultra-High Vacuum Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Pulsed Laser Deposition System (equipped with Scanning Tunneling Microscope Probe),Digital Instrument’s(USA) and Seiko’s (JPN) Atomic Force Microscope and Scanning Tunnel Microscope, Sputtering Deposition Systems which cooperate with New Cologne(JPN), several Scanning Tunneling Microscope System and the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Test Platform which are designed and built independently. Simultaneously, the Laboratory relies on the physical and chemical analysis of public testing platform of HFNL, with the condition of analysis and test, such as comprehensive and integrated material structure morphology characterization, spectro-scopic characterization, components analysis and physical measurement.
Nano-materials preparation, assembly and high-resolution characterization and control is treated as main contents in the Laboratory .Since the foundation, many remarkable achievements have been made in single-molecule chemistry and physics field of nanotechnology, more than 300 papers have been deliv-ered in international famous magazines such as Nature ,Science, Phys. Rev. Lett.,J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Inter. Ed.,Adv. Mater.. Of them ,the high-resolution characterization of single molecules and regulation are particularly prominent: the research on the two-dimensional domain singular C60 orde-red structure is delivered in Nature(2001),and the research on the single-molecule spin states control is published in Science(2005).These two papers were selected as China's annual top 10 scientific and tech-nological progress (2001 and 2005),and were named as China’s top 10 news of basic scientific research in 2001 and China's top 10 science and technology news; "C60 molecules on Si (111) surface Orientation of the adsorption” which was published in Phys. Rev. Lett in 1999 was named as China’ top 10 news of basic scientific research (1999),and APS photo news net released a news "Buckball Orientation" to intro-duce this outcome. In addition, the Laboratory also carries out a series of researches in low-dimensional nano-materials, nano-devices and Quantum devices, functional thin film and fuel cell, and have achieved some important results.
During the ten years ,the Laboratory has won the first prize of CAS natural science, the top award of CAIA (2001), the first prize of Anhui natural science (2003), the first prize of Anhui Science and Tech-nology (2005), the second prize of national natural science (2005), and other provincial, ministerial and national scientific and technological awards; Over 10 outstanding doctors have been trained, three of th-em were of the 100 outstanding doctoral dissertation awards and three of them won the CAS president special prize, many of them won CAS outstanding doctoral dissertation award and CAS president award.
